Tips on Avoiding Madeira Island Tourist Traps

Madeira Island Tourist Traps

The Madeira islands are noted for many things including the famous local wines and an impressive New Year’s fireworks display. Watch for problems like slow airport service if you want to have an even better time. Madeira is a piece of Portugal in the Atlantic. Minor tourist traps should not mar your fun if you know what they are in advance.

Airport Bus Service

There’s a free bus service between the airport and the main town. It’s run by the airlines. Keep in mind that while free, the bus can be slow. There are long gaps between buses, particularly on weekends. You might want to consider hiring a taxi instead if you’re really in a rush.

Sled Riding in Monte

Originally developed as a means of getting down the hill fast, today it’s a popular tourist attraction. Your feelings about this may vary depending on your feelings about going downhill. Keep in mind that it’s not cheap and you can take the funicular up and down for the cost of a single ride down the hill.

High Prices at the Mercado dos Lavradores

The major market in Madeira is the Mercado. This market is where you can find both bargains and things that might be slightly overpriced. Examine all fruit for quality before you buy it. Smell the fish to make sure it does not have fishy scent. Baskets are a local specialty but they need to be fine quality with a tight weave before you buy them. The famous bottles of Madeira wine are also sold here. Ask for a sample if you have any doubts about the quality.
