Tourist Traps in Bucharest
In comparison with other major European cities, Bucharest, Romania, is fairly safe. There’s not a high rate of crime, but there are traps that take advantage of unknowing tourists.
Pickpockets
When in crowds, visitors should take note of who’s around and guard personal items. Bags should be held close with arms around them. Cash should be stashed in an inside pocket, where it cannot be seen or stolen. Handbags and backpacks should always be closed and kept them in front of the body for extra safety. Pickpockets are known to grab a camera or a wallet and run. Tourists must always be on alert.
Safe Taxis in Bucharest
Unauthorized taxis tend to take a much higher fee from visitors than locals. These taxis are often waiting at the airport, bus station or train station, and the drivers go inside of the station to lure people into their taxis. To avoid these scams, tourists should look for taxis outside the station that have the drivers sitting inside the car. Real taxis will have a red or green light on top and an oval plate with the driver’s license number displayed. The driver should turn on the meter rather than negotiating a fare.
People on the Street
Homeless people in Bucharest can be aggressive in their tactics to get money from visitors. The best thing to do when approached by one is to politely but firmly say no and continue walking.
