Australia is a diverse and beautiful continent and country, but it is important to be cautious outside of the cities and at beaches for wildlife and riptides.

Water Dangers

Australia is home to several nasty species of jellyfish including the box jellyfish and bluebottles. If you are told to get out of the water because they have been spotted, get out immediately. Another danger are crocodiles found in the Northern Territory. One of the most dangerous is the saltwater, or estuarine crocodile.

Also be wary of the riptides and strong currents at many of the beaches on the East Coast of the country. Tamarama Beach near Sydney, is especially dangerous.

Land Creatures

Australia is also home to many dangerous land creatures. A significant number of the world’s most dangerous snakes are here. Know what they look like before you do and do not attempt to pick one up. Another dangerous Aussie creature are spiders, and  the country is home to several of the world’s most dangerous species. Funnel spiders are particularly dangerous and come out after periods of rains and burrow in things like shoes. You can get killed from a single sting if you don’t have the antidote quickly enough. If you think you’ve been bitten by a spider or a snake, take a picture, and immediately go to the closest medical center.

Sun Exposure

Australia has a very thin ozone layer, so the sun’s rays are much stronger here. Even if you’re just out for an hour, slather yourself with sunscreen. Keep in mind that Australian summers can be some of the hottest in the world. Bring a hat and enough water with you everywhere to avoid heat exhaustion and sun poisoning.
