Akumal Warnings and Dangers
Akumal is part of the Mexican Riviera, a string of white sandy beaches and gorgeous clear blue water in the area around Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. It is a paradise of sorts, and there are some very nice unspoiled areas. But even in paradise there are dangers to watch out for.
Drug Cartels Are Not Here
On a positive note, most reviewers say there is not a problem with drug cartels having gunfights in the streets. This area has not been affected by that.
People Watch for Opportunities to Steal
The dangers are more on a small scale. Your money and possessions will be more likely to be in danger than your body or your life. There have been reports of items disappearing from hotel rooms.
Items also disappear when left around swimming pools and other public areas. Sometimes hotel staff members will steal, and there are people in public just waiting for a tourist to be careless.
Don’t Be Intimidated
At some hotels if your property disappears, the staff may make threats and tell you to not call the police.
Don’t Be Scammed by Timeshare Salesmen
Many people like paradise so much they are tempted by deals for timeshares. Be aware that not everything people tell you is true, and there are many con artists operating. Some travelers have warned that Sireni Resort is a place where some bad operators have scammed people.
Don’t sign anything, or give any money to anyone, until you get back home and have your attorney look things over. If it is legitimate, they wont have a problem with waiting.
