Weeki Wachee Things to Do
One of Florida’s top attractions, there are a lot of great, family-fun activities at Weeki Wachee. In addition to the water park, the area is home to a lot of state parks and nature preserves.
Mermaid Show and Buccaneer Bay Park
This spectacle has been happening since 1947 and is still a crowd favorite. Buccaneer Bay park has four water slides and a beach area on the other side of the river from the area where the mermaid show is housed. The main draw at the park, aside from the mermaid show, are the water slides: Pirates’s Plunge, the Thunderbolt, the Pirate’s Revenge and the Cannonball.
Exploring the Wetlands in Crystal River State Park
There is a boat launch in town, but parking is limited, especially spaces able to accommodate boat trailers. Alcohol is illegal in the park, and power boats are limited to 5mph. Most tourists enjoy exploring the park via kayaks or inflatable rafts. The meandering waterways are lined on either side with houses that have shoreside access for cars. The manatee can be found swimming in these waters, and there have been entire families of these “sea cows” spotted in the area.
Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins State Park
Located a quick 25 miles north of Weeki Wachee is the charming fishing village of Homosassa, and within the town is the historic Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins State Park. Established in 1851 by David Levy, this 5,000 acre sugar cane plantation is now a state park. The ruins of the sugar mill are interesting to explore, and the park offers some great hiking and bird watching.
