Toodyay Things to Do
Toodyay is a wonderful town with buildings that have the architectural style of over 100-years ago all lining the main thoroughfare of Stirling Street. Visiting Toodyay is like going back in time and it is a fun place to visit in order to see how Australians lived over a century ago.
Natural Beauty
During the months of September and October, the wildflowers around Toodyay are in full bloom. The canola fields are a carpet of natural, golden-yellow that covers the countryside.
Strolling and Shopping on Stirling Street
Shopping in Toodyay is really fun. If you are looking for antiques this is a town to visit because the shops have the same facades that they had in the late 1800s such as Ellery’s Arcade that first opened in 1890. The super box concrete stores have not yet invaded this area. And, thank God, there is no McDonald’s anywhere in sight. This means what you find when shopping in Toodyay is authentic and charming.
The public library was opened in 1874. The fire station from around that time is now an art gallery. The Toodyay Memorial Hall has a clock on the front that has been keeping accurate time for over one hundred years.
If you want to enjoy the Christmas spirit, visit the Christmas 360 shop that sells Christmas decorations all year long. Christmas in July? Good on ya!
Visit the Connor’ Mill building that was established in 1870 by an entrepreneurial ex-convict to process wheat into flour, which is still the main industry in this area today.
Of course, there are all the modern conveniences like an ATM and bank. However, they are blended into the old town facade, in order not to disturb the overall feeling of this charming town from years long ago.
Victoria Hotel
If you go to Toodyay for the first time, stay at the Victoria Hotel for the full experience. It opened in 1836. The prices for a room are very reasonable ranging from AUS$30 to AUS$100 per night. This hotel has a nice bar, a restaurant, and is next to the Victoria Billiard Hall where you can play a great game of billiards. It is better not to bet against the locals because they are really good, having practiced for decades at this billiard hall. Nevertheless, much fun can be had while enjoying a stay at the Victoria Hotel and relaxing with a game of billiards after dinner and a few drinks.
