Dover may not be the first place you think of when you consider the east coast as a vacation spot, but there is plenty of things of interest here. The city and area has everything from Amish to Aerospace, and many things in between, like NASCAR racing and casinos. Here are some things to do in Dover, Delaware.

Air Mobility Command Museum

Dover is home to an Air Force Base, and part of that is the air mobility command museum. There are a lot of vintage aircraft to see, as well as information about modern day air technology. Military airlift and tanker aircraft, which are huge, are stationed at the base here. The Museum preserves their history,

Other Museums

Dover has lots of history and it takes a lot of museums to preserve it all. The Delaware Agricultural Museum has artifacts from the local agricultural heritage, and shows the development of farming. The Biggs Museum of Art has 200 years of local art history on display. Also in the downtown area there is Museum Square, that has museums dedicated to small town life, archeology and the Johnson Victrola Museum.

Downtown

The downtown area, particularly Loockerman Street, has a lot of historic buildings and is a very nice downtown area. There are more historic sites here, as well as little shops, and there are eateries along Loockerman. While downtown you can also visit the seat of state government; the capitol, statehouse, and the governor’s mansion are all close by. The Golden Fleece Tavern, which has been restored, is worth checking out. This building goes back to the 1730’s and the very early days of the state, so it has a strong Revolutionary War connection. The Hanson House is also near the state capitol and is the oldest known standing building in Dover, built in 1730.

Nightlife

There is also something for people who want to go out on the town in Dover. Dover Downs is a smoke free casino in Dover. There is live horse racing, as well as a full casino. The facility also has concerts and shows regularly. During the offseason they have simulcast racing from other tracks, and you can also bet on those.
