Things To Do in Samothraki Island, Greece

Samothraki Island Things to Do

Samothraki Island is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations in Greece. The island lies in the Aegean Sea in northeastern Greece. The food and sightseeing are out of this world, and the island is also committed to being a sustainable tourist destination, something they have been recognized for with the QualityCoast Award. If you are planning on visiting the island, here are some things to do that you should check out.

Sanctuary of the Great Gods

This is certainly the most famous site on the island. The winged-victor Nike is depicted at the Sanctuary via a 2.5-meter statue, the most popular attraction in the Sanctuary of the Gods. It is estimated that it has stood since almost 200 BC. The Sanctuary of the Gods was discovered in the late 1800s by French explorers. It was almost completely intact when it was found.

Visit Some Ancient City Ruins

Paleopolis, an ancient city that is left in ruins, sits on the northern coats on the island. It is a must-see for any visitor that has a proclivity for historical sights. It was a walled city built in the Cyclopean style, and most of the walls still stand as they did in ancient times. There is a museum nearby with information on the ruins.

Visit the Island’s Capital

The capital city is called Chora or Hora by the locals. It sits in a natural cove on the mountain. It was built in a hidden natural amphitheater to help protect the local residents from pirates. One of the best things about it is the small winding streets the curve up the mountain and make up the towns pathways. There are many great cafés in the city with exhilarating views of the beach.
