Food

Bennett House is a sweet treat for those looking for a unique experience. The small restaurant focuses on tea and serves different fare on a daily basis. No matter what they’re serving, though, you can be sure that it’s elegant. This is the perfect to place to take a young girl who’s always planning tea parties for her stuffed animals. If you’re looking for more everyday fare, head over to The Buddha for lunch. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of deli sandwiches and fresh soups and salads made daily.

Historical Sites

The downtown Richmond area is a part of the National Main Street Community, and the beautifully restored buildings retain the look of the 19th century commercial districts. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in this area. At the Richmond Visitor Center, you can pick up a booklet that will take you on a self-guided tour of the historic homes in the area.

At the Fort Boonesboro National Park, you can see what life was like in the 1700s. Artisans are on hand, making the things that were so necessary to life back then. The nearby White Hall is a 44-room mansion once owned by Cassius Clay. You’ll learn about his interesting history, which includes beating up three intruders when he was 92 years old. Some say the house is haunted, and they have special events around Halloween. Save money on these two destinations by purchasing a combo ticket.

Horses

While the famous Kentucky Derby might be held an hour and a half away, it should come as no surprise that horses are wildly popular throughout the state. In Richmond, you can see the races at the Keeneland Race Track. The Kentucky Horse Park is home to a horse museum, but you can also get up close and personal with the horses that live there. There are special events throughout the year, so check the schedule. Deer Run Stables is the perfect place to go if you simply want to ride the horses. They offer lessons and trail riding for people of all ages. Campsites are available as well.

Family Fun

When the weather is nice, take the family to play miniature golf at Adventure Falls. Once you’ve finished your round, you can enjoy a picnic lunch in the picnic area, then test your batting swing in the batting cages. At Richmond Underground, your family can battle each other or others with a fun game of laser tag.
