Things To Do In Puerto de la Cruz, Spain

Puerto de la Cruz Things to Do

Puerto de la Cruz is located on the north of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. This popular resort town has amazing beaches and many historical attractions.

Beaches

There are many beaches, or playas, throughout the Puerto de la Cruz area. Some of the more popular ones are: Playa Martinez which is popular among surfers due to the strong and frequent waves. Playa Martinez, located in the new town, is also a big hit with sunbathers. Playa San Telmo is covered with rocks which creates an interesting landscape. Many visitors enjoy the view from the promenade of the waves crashing over the rocks. This beach joins the old town with the new. Playa Jardin is the largest and most popular of all the Puerto de la Cruz beaches, although some tourists do not care for the black, volcanic sand that covers the beach.

Sito Litre and Botanical Gardens

Sitio Litre is a beautiful orchid garden above the city center of Puerto de la Cruz, and it is highly recommended that you take a taxi up to the gardens and then walk back into town. This mansion and its surrounding gardens date from the early 18th century, and while the gardens are open to the public for a fee, the mansion remains private. The garden has a section dedicated to British mystery writer Agatha Christie, and a terrace honoring botanical artist Marianne North. The gardens have a strong British influence, and many notable English citizens have visited throughout history.

The Botanical Gardens are also situated above the town, and it is recommended that they be reached by taxi. These gardens were established in the late 1700’s and are home to some very rare tropical and sub-tropical plants. There are many beautiful trees and plants to view, many notable for their age, size or rareness.

Bateria de Santa Barbara

Behind the Customs House are the ruins of the old fort constructed in 1741. The remains include stairs down to the water and are in a picturesque spot in the harbor. It is a perfect spot for a day of exploring the old town.
