Pontianak Things to Do

Located on the island of Borneo and seated in the delta of the Kapuas River, Kota Pontianak is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan. Visitors to the area will find many things to do when in the area.

The Equator Monument

Fifty years ago, crossing the equator was something special. Airlines once gave out certificates when travelling into another hemisphere. Although these aren’t given out today, you can receive one in Pontianak if you visit the Equator Monument. The site of the monument was chosen by an international expedition in 1928, and today this makes a popular spot for visitors.

The Kapuas River

The Kapuas River is a very large river that splits Pontianak city into two parts. It has traditionally played an important role in Pontianak’s economy and cultural history. As you walk along the shore, you can find houses floating out on the river. The area is also filled by fishermen who spend their days on the water.

Culture

There are a number of cultural attractions to find in the area. The West Kalimantan Provincial Museum carries displays of artifacts, including ancient yachts used by local rulers, as well as weapons and tools that were once common. Visitors can also visit the Dayak Longhouse, a replica of the type of longhouse once used by tribes native to the region.
