Things To Do in Picos de Europa, Spain

Picos de Europa Things To Do

Along the northern coast of Spain lies Picos de Europa. The mountain range is just 20km from the northern shore of Spain and is visited most commonly for the world-class hiking and other outdoor activities that it provides. It has some very tall mountains and some of the deepest caves in the world.

Impressive Peaks

The tallest peaks in this small coastal range are just under 9,000-feet tall. These are by no means amongst the tallest mountains in the world, but they are very tall considering their proximity to the coast. Usually, mountains that close to the coast are not as tall or jagged. They provide breathtaking views both from the top of the mountain but are even more beautiful from the ground, thanks to their jagged edges thanks to centuries of carving from slow-moving glaciers. In the center sits a vast gorge.

Some of the Best Hiking in Spain

Lago Ercina has some of the best scenery and hiking in Europe. Like the mountains in the region, the lake was created glacially. The lake sits in a valley in the mountains at 4,500-feet above sea level. There is a winding trail that weaves in and out of the peaks. It is important to get there early as this location is very popular and it can be hard to find parking. The trails can be hard to find but it is magical once you do. Just stay to the East and you will be able to find it.

The Most Spectacular Sites

The Cares river is no hike for the faint of heart. The trail that winds around the Cares River will take you to some of the biggest waterfalls in the country. Avoid the trail if you are afraid of heights, because it can go far above the river. It is also a good idea to have a car waiting for you at the end of the trail if you are not an experienced hiker as the trip can be quite arduous for some.

Potes

The busiest town in the area is Potes. It has a classic feel, thanks to its cobblestone streets and classic architecture. There are some modern amenities for travelers, though, including an internet cafe on the main street. This is the cultural center of the area and can become crowded with travelers during peak season.
