Things to Do in Olympia, Washington State

Olympia Things to Do

Olympia is the capitol of Washington State and a great little town to visit. It might not have the hustle and bustle of a large city like Seattle, but there are still plenty of things to do.

Capitol Building

The Capitol Building and the surrounding area makes for a great day trip. Head there on a weekday to ensure that all of the buildings are open. You can go on a self-guided tour or one that’s led by an expert who can answer any questions you might have. While the main building itself is great to see, you’ll also want to look for monuments and sculptures around the area, such as the Winged Victory monument that commemorates World War I.

Tumwater Falls Park

Nature-lovers and photographers will want to head out to Tumwater Falls Park. You’ll get great views of waterfalls, and if you’re there in the autumn, you’ll even be able to see salmon using the “fish ladders” to help them swim upstream to their mating grounds. The hiking is relatively easy, and you won’t have to go too far to get some great view.

The Farmers’ Market

The Farmers’ Market is a great place to get fresh food, especially if you want to stock up on healthy produce. Craftspeople often sell their wares at the market, too, and you’ll be able to find unique pieces like glass art and one-of-a-kind clothing. Live musical acts perform here often, so check the schedules. Parking can be difficult, but the market itself is rarely overcrowded. It’s only open from May through October, though, so plan your trip accordingly.

Hand’s on Children’s Museum

If you have kids in the under-10 age range, take them to the Hands on Museum. It features several different areas that engage children in a variety of ways. Your child can play with art supplies, feel what it’s like to sit in a police car and role play in a pint-sized grocery store. You’ll even have fun getting in on the action.
