While Niagara-on-the-Lake may not be as famous as the Falls, there a number of ways to enjoy yourself if you visit this area. Check out these things to do from past travelers to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Wine and Dine

Wine tours come highly recommended for this area. There are far too many to list, but they all seem to offer their own personal touches. Between the food, ambiance and the grapes, you might want to visit a few on your trip here to experience the range of what they have to offer. Of course each vineyard keeps up its space for both the tourists and the locals alike, but they also have unique characteristics too. For example, Chateau des Charmes Winery is famous for its ice wines, while Marynissen is known for its friendly staff and amazing whites. Other notable names are Henry of Pelham, which is praised for its underground store and tasting area.

History of Niagara-on-the-Lake

There are a number of ways to soak up the history of this part of Canada. Visit Fort George, which is close enough to walk to from downtown. This fort was recently went through a major renovation, and you can learn more about the War of 1812. Stick around for the reenactments to see how the cannons and muskets were used. If you’re looking for something a little less traditional, there’s Mystery on the Lake which is a theater experience where you get to be the star. It gives you a unique way to explore the area and learn more about its history. You don’t know where you’ll end up, but you will have to try to figure out the mystery along the way. You’ll meet plenty of characters as you work out the puzzle, and you’ll have a good time.

Stroll Around Town

Many people recommend just walking around the main areas of town. Not only is it free but it’s great exercise. Or rent bikes to cover more ground. Window shop or visit Simcoe Park, which is named for a former Lieutenant Governor who also happened to found Niagara-on-the-Lake (under the name Newark.) Take a picnic there for a perfect afternoon. Or sit by Lake Ontario for amazing sunsets and endless sailboats. Trees and grass make this a great place to relax. Or see more greenery at the Botanical Gardens, which houses flowers and a Butterfly Conservatory to enjoy all-year round. Main Street holds some fun shopping opportunities where you can find specialty foods and crafts to take home with you or to send to loved ones. You can also see this street by carriage tour, where you’ll be take around by a horse and driver who know the area well. Advertised as a romantic thing to do, but also great with a friend (or even alone!)
