Things to Do in Kodaikanal, India

Kodaikanal Things to Do

The city of Kodaikanal in India is rather interesting. When you visit parts will look straight out of the UK (even the fog and clouds look like it is out of the UK), yet it is beautifully mixed with Indian style and culture as well. All of this put together makes for an incredible and interesting time in Kodaikanal.

Thalaiyar Falls

The falls are a beautiful half day trip to take in. There are a few different points of interest you can stop by while visiting the falls. Instructions are given around the small hiking trail around the area in English, so you can find your way without a guide. Make sure to bring your camera as you can snap pictures from several angles.

Coaker’s Walk

This is both a beautiful and relaxing walk. It does have a slight incline but it curves around a hill as it goes up so it isn’t as hard on your legs. At the top, you’ll have a wonderful view of the entire valley below. There are also some small yet fun shops selling everything from food to small clothing items. Everything is locally made so you don’t need to worry about imports. It is recommended to do the walk early as it does fill up after midday. You’ll also be able to see the fog roll away through the valley, which is a pretty interesting experience as you’ll eventually be higher than the fog down below. The walk itself is only about 1 km, so it is on the short side. Talk with your hotel about when sunrise is. If you can, try to walk up before sunrise. The colors as the sun rises above the edge of the valley and the sunlight skips through the fog is a sight to take in.

Golfing

There is an excellent 18-hole course in Kodaikanal. It isn’t terribly difficult and the holes are usually par 3 or par 4, but it is a fun open course to play and not terribly expensive. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon while playing a course you likely haven’t played before.

Dolphin Nose and Kodaikanal Valley View

The path here is far tighter than the other walks, so it is recommended only if you are in better shape to walk at higher inclines. Dolphin Nose received its name because it comes in an almost rounded point (although it really doesn’t look like a dolphin at all). When you stand close to the edge you’ll have an incredible view that, only a clear day, can go for a hundred miles into the horizon. You can see a handful of villages down in the valley, not to mention hear the local birds chirping along as you make your way back down. Along the path you can even see the local flora.
