Hofn Things to Do
Seated along the picturesque Hornafjorour fjord, the Icelandic fishing town of Hofn make an attractive place to visit. Visitors will find plenty to see and many things to do during their stay.
The Massive Glaciers and Ice Caves
In winter, it is possible to trek out to and explore an ice cave, which is a cave formed from ice during the coldest parts of the season. This occurs in the area of Jokulsarlon, and tours require a specialist guide. The trip can be slightly dangerous and should never be attempted without one of these guides. The journey involves an off-road drive over very rough terrain, so you do need to be in reasonable health to do this. The effort is worth it though, since these caves boast a unique beauty.
If you prefer to stay out of the caves, you can still see large ice formations. On the Southwest coast of Iceland is the largest glacier lake in the country. This lake is also part of Jokulsarlon, a name that actually means “glacier lagoon.”
While Hofn is a small town of Iceland, it is home to a very nice harbor. Walking around the shores in the evening is ideal if you’d like to have photos of the sea. You can also visit a glacier exhibition in the town if you’d prefer to stay out of the cold.
