Things to Do in Gaspe, Canada

Gaspe Things to Do

Gaspe is located northeast of Quebec City at the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula. It contains beautiful sights and a long history that provide many places to go and things to do for tourists.

Museums

Gaspe has an interesting history and is the location where Jacques Cartier first laid claim to the region for France. Given its extensive past, it should be no surprise that there are a number of museums in the area. The Musee Acadien du Quebec works to illustrate the history of the French in the region. This two-story location traces the history of the Acadians, French individuals who refused allegiance to Britain after the English took the area. There is also the Musee de la Gaspesie, which displays artifacts, cultural displays, and exhibits produced by a famed local artist, Suzanne Guite. Included in the permanent collection is a display related to the Battle of St. Lawrence, a torpedo, and other memorabilia related to the battle.

Nature Sights

The Parc National de Miguasha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a famous fossil site on the Gaspe Peninsula. Another geological wonder in Gaspe is the Perce Rock, which rises out of the water to a height of just more than 45 meters and is almost half a kilometer long.

Culture

There are a number of cultural sites throughout Gaspe that attract visitors. The Church of Bonaventure was officially inaugurated in 1860 and remains to this day, albeit with regular renovations to maintain the structure. Meanwhile, scattered along the coasts and highways are the lighthouses of Gaspe. The Cap-des-Rosiers is the tallest and oldest of these at 150 years of age. Finally, the waterfront is dotted with stone statues and other memorials to heroes from the city’s past.
