Elounda Things to Do
Elounda, Greece is becoming a popular resort town, thanks to some of the celebrities that have begun to frequent the town for vacations. It’s a small fishing town on the northern coast of the island of Crete. There is a number of exquisite hotels being built in the area to satisfy the needs of the growing tourism industry. If you are planning a visit to Elounda, here are some of the more popular things to do.
See Some Ancient Ruins
On the coast near the beach is the ruins of what used to be the leper colony on the island. Parts of the hospital are still intact. For a while, the small area was also a Turkish encampment. This is some of the best sightseeing on the island.
The village of Elounda itself contains some ruins to explore. Although, they are much less broken down than the ruins of the leper colony. The church still stands mostly as it was in ancient times. There is also a row of buildings that act as souvenir and tourists shops, but they are only open during the more busy season. One of the most breathtaking aspects of the village are the tunnels, primarily the one that you have to take to get into the city itself.
There is a small island off of the coast of Elounda called Spinalonga Island. In ancient times, it acted as a defensive fortress against those trying to invade in the area. Much of the fort still stands today. There is a boat that takes you to the island. Once you get there, you have one hour to explore it. This shouldn’t be too hard since it’s relatively small.
