Civitavecchia Things To Do

Part of the ancient area of historic Rome, Civitavecchia is a short day trip from the capital of Italy. Visiting this city feels like stepping back in time. You’ll see evidence of ancient Roman times and a modern area.

The Beaches and Sea Front

The public beach here is small, but not crowded even during the summer. There’s an ornate pier that juts out from the beach. You can explore it on foot and head for a manmade island just off shore. Behind the beach you can find a market with lots of people selling seafood, fresh fruit and items like tie dyed clothing. This a busy port and a major stop for cruise ships. Ships dock her for Rome. Walk along the promenade here, get some sun and watch them disembark.

The Fort

Once part of the Papal States, the town has a fort that was built five hundred years ago and still stands today. Created in the shape of a quadrangle, it has four bastions that once served as a way to get down to the sea. For a small fee, you can tour the inside or just walk along the outside and see the entire port.

The Archaeological-Botanical Park of the Taurine Baths

One of the must-see sights of city, the Taurine Baths, were built around hot water springs to allow the Romans to spend time enjoying the warm waters.  The place is divided into two main parts. There’s the Republican Baths that date all the way back to the 1st century B.C.  There’s also the Imperial Baths that were built by Emperor Hadrian. You can have a look around on your own go on a guided tour. The tour will tell you how the baths were made, and what archeologists today know about them. Expect to devote about two hours for the full tour.

Stroll Along the City Center

The center of town is relatively compact and makes an ideal stroll during the day. The main street is the Viale Giuseppe Garibaldi. This is where you will find lots of cafes and restaurants. Check out the municipal theater for performances in Italian. There are several noteworthy churches in town, including La Chiesa Dell’Immacolata, and the St. Francis of Assissi cathedral. For a look at authentic Italian life without lots of tourists nearby check out the Piazza Leandra. It is dominated by many small buildings in warm colors. This is where many locals gather at night to enjoy the sunset. The Corso Centocelle is another gathering place for locals with lots more cafe and restaurants serving regional seafood dishes.
