Barranquilla Things to Do
Barranquilla is a city in Colombia that is comfortably located along the Caribbean Sea. Its pleasant climate attracts thousands of tourists every year, and there are plenty of exciting things to do when in the region.
Modern Local Landmarks
While strolling along the streets of El Prado, you will find the Catedral Metropolitana María Reina. Its construction started in 1955 and was officially completed in 1982. This modern structure holds some pleasant surprises, including beautiful stained-glass window designs and two wall mosaics that incorporate colored German glass. One of the highlights is also an over-the-altar bronze sculpture by Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, one of the most important sculptors of Colombia and Latin America.
One of the most loved and revered venues for barranquilleros is undoubtedly the Teatro Amira de la Rosa. The theater has been a social epicenter of the city and an artistic meeting point, where major national and international events take place. It hosts dance and theater performances, workshops for children, conferences, and writer’s readings. The area around the theater is surrounded with gardens and green areas for outdoor shows, such as the famous festival Barranquijazz.
The narrow, cobblestone streets of the city are lined with the balconies of old Spanish mansions such as Bodegón de la Candelaria and Casa del Marques de Valdehoyos. You can tour some of these houses by inquiring at the local tourist office. You can also stop in on La Inmaculada, one of the most impressive and oldest churches in the city.
