Things To Do in Alamogordo, New Mexico

Alamogordo Things to Do

New Mexico is called the “Land of Enchantment”. This is an appropriate name considering the amazing natural beauty that the state possesses. You may have most heard of it as the location where the first atom bomb was tested in America. It is also bordered on each side by the Sacramento Mountains and the White Sands National Monument. If you are planning on visiting the city, here the most popular attractions and activities.

Visit the New Mexico Museum of Space History

The Space History museum is one the east side of the city. There are a bunch of free exhibits outside. For a small fee, you can gain admission to the inside and check out all the cool things to see there. There is no shortage of stuff to see in side the museum as you start at the top and wind your way down. They often show informational movies in the IMAX theater in the museum. This museum is open every day of the year except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

White Sands National Monument

The National Monument is the number attraction in Alamogordo. These are some of the biggest sand dunes in the country. One interesting thing is that they are always moving because of the heavy winds that can occur in the area. Because of this, the park managers have to constantly work on the trails to make sure they are correct. One great thing to do at the monument is to take a ranger-led hike. These usually depart every day around sunset. It is wiser to visit this location during the winter as it can get extremely hot there in the summer, sometimes reaching temperatures over 100 degrees.
