Thing To Do in Byron Bay, Australia

Byron Bay Things to Do

Byron Bay is on the eastern side of Australia and is one of the first places on the continent that was settled by those who came from England. It is surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, but there are a plethora of things to do in the area.

Ocean Kayaking

A nice way to spend the afternoon is ocean kayaking with the help of a professional guide. It is quite a bit of work to kayak out into the bay. If the waves flip the kayak over, you will get wet. The rewards from this adventure are playing in the waves and the chance to view sea turtles and perhaps some dolphins or whales, depending on the season.

Cape Bryon Headland and Lighthouse

There is a 5 km walking trail that leads from Watego’s Beach up the headland (94 meters above sea level) to the lighthouse and back. It is quite steep in places, so allow plenty of time to make the trek. The lighthouse is on top of the headland and has been helping to guide ships safely into Bryon Bay since 1901. The view from the coastline is spectacular.

Beaches

Byron Bay has beautiful beaches, and the Pacific Ocean water is a stunning bright blue color. These areas are popular for swimming, surfing, and diving. Shark attacks are rare; however, it is best to stay within the flags that mark the beach area, which is patrolled by lifeguards.

Nimbim

This little town in Rainbow County is a hippy paradise where marijuana is sold openly almost everywhere. There is the Nimbim Museum, which is an odd collection of strange things that are sort of chucked about. It has a hippy van jutting out from the front of the building so it is easy to find it. Nimbim is located in the center of some stunning landscape. It is close to both the Nightcap National Park and the Whian Whian State Forest. It is an ideal stopover for coffee or lunch if you do not mind that everyone tries to sell you marijuana, including old ladies. Just down the hill from the town are the Nimbin Rocks, which is a sacred Aboriginal site.
