Ancient Ruins

Thessaloniki is an ancient city. Traces of Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine rule remain. While not as easy to find as in Athens, ruins are scattered throughout the city and are definitely worth a visit. Places are particular interest include the Byzantine Walls, Yahudi Hamam, Galerius Palace, Plateia Kyprion Agoniston, and Ippodromiou square, just to name a few.

Churches and Mosques

Thessaloniki is a spiritual city. For generations, this land was fought over in the name of God. While in town, checkout the Alatza Imaret Mosque, Panagia Chalkeon church, Agia Theodora monastery, Hamza Bey Mosque, and Agios Nikolaos Orfanos church. Hagia Sophia, one of the oldest churches in Thessaloniki, but not the more famous one by the same name that’s located in Istanbul, is a must see. The church was originally constructed in the 3rd century, but it had to be rebuilt several times. The structure you can visit today was erected in the 8th century.

Markets

Thessaloniki’s city center is lively and is home to several markets. Modiano and Kapani are two markets found downtown, near Aristotelous square. There, you can buy locally raised meat, fish, eggs, seafood, vegetables, fruit, coffee, tea, and much more.
