The 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

November 9th marks a very historic date in Berlin—this year, it is the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which happened on the same date in 1989. To commemorate this event, the city is hosting many events in memorial.

Border of Lights

From November 7–9, 8,000 helium-filled white balloons will light up a 9.5-mile stretch where the wall used to be. Video screens next to the balloons will play historic video footage from the time. On November 9th, the balloons (made of biodegradable materials) will be released into the sky.

Concerts

  • On November 8th, chamber ensembles will play at Mauerpark, East Side Gallery, and Checkpoint Charlie.
  • Singers Udo Lindenberg and Peter Gabriel will perform at a street festival at the Brandenburg Gate on November 9.
  • The Berliner Philharmoniker will do a special concert on November 9.
  • Exhibitions

  • From November 7–9, a temporary exhibition titled, Hundreds of Wall Stories, will be on display, featuring 100 informational exhibits.
  • A permanent exhibition, 1961: 1981, opens November 9th at the Berlin Wall Memorial and Documentation Centre
  • The Berliner Philharmoniker will do a special concert on November 9.
  • Memorial Services

  • A central memorial service will be held at the Chapel of Reconciliation on November 9th.
  • A service will be held at the Berliner Allee Wall Memorial in honor of the over 200 people who died at the Wall.
  • Sightseeing Flights

    AirBerlin will offer three sightseeing flights on November 8th. The flights will fly at a low altitude and retrace the course of the former wall.
