Thank you for not smoking on cruise ships

Recently, cruise lines have been cracking down on onboard smoking. I’d credit two things for this trend: the [% 328232 | | fire %] on the Star Princess in 2006 and the increase in states and cities banning smoking in restaurants and bars. The latest line to jump on this bandwagon is [% 2360581 | | MSC Cruises %]. Its new strict policy limits smoking to the Cigar Room, casino, one specific lounge, and a few designated cabins. Guests can smoke outside and on one side of the sun deck, but not in the majority of cabins or cabin balconies.

Want to know where smokers stand on the other cruise lines? Here’s a quick summary.

Azamara: The two ships are completely smoke free with the exceptions of one section of the Looking Glass Lounge and one section of the pool deck.

Carnival: On Carnival, you can smoke in the casino, dance club, certain bars and lounges, and in specific sections of the outdoor decks. Smoking is also allowed in all cabins.

Celebrity: Cigarette smoking is permitted in staterooms and on the left side of most public areas.

Holland America: Holland America allows smoking in staterooms and in designated areas of most lounges.

Norwegian: Smokers can light up in their staterooms and balconies, in the casino and Cigar Bar, as well as in outside areas away from the sports deck, food venues, or kids’ areas.

Oceania: Designated smoking areas can be found on Deck Nine, one corner of the pool deck, and in one section of Horizons.

Princess: Princess allows smoking in staterooms, on balconies, and in designated indoor and outdoor areas.

Regent Seven Seas: Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas, the casino, and a few lounges. Regent is in the process of banning smoking in all staterooms and balconies, and the policy will be enacted fleetwide by the beginning of February.

Royal Caribbean: In 2008, Royal Caribbean will [% 2400240 | | restrict smoking %] to designated areas and the starboard side of outdoor decks. Guests can smoke on their balconies but not inside their staterooms.

Windstar: Smoking is only allowed outside, on the starboard side of the lounge, and in the casino on the Wind Surf.
