Taxis, Hanoi – Transportation

Taxis

When in Hanoi, Vietnam, you will no doubt use a taxi service at some point. Overall, taxis are a safe and reasonable way to get around, however you should be aware of possible scams and other issues. Always keep in mind that tourists are frequently taken advantage of in many cities, and the best you can do is be prepared and informed. The more you know, the less likely you are to be a victim.

Getting to the City

Some people prefer to book a taxi from the airport in advance, and while this may be more convenient, it isn’t necessarily cheaper. You’ll find that the Hanoi Transfer Service is a reasonable, courteous way to get around.

It’s always a good idea to keep on top of current exchange rates. Some taxi drivers don’t update them and will charge outdated rates based on that.

Also, don’t be fooled into thinking that you need to pay more than what the meter says. Some unscrupulous taxi drivers will try to fool you into thinking you owe more than you do. Always make sure they turn on the meter, and don’t pay more than the meter. Also, don’t let them talk you into paying U.S. dollars — they can’t ask you to do that, they should only be asking for payment in Dong.

Overall, you shouldn’t have much trouble using taxis in Hanoi, but be aware of scams, stay on top of things and keep track of your bags at all times — they are your responsibility.
