Swanage Things to Do
Swanage is a small town in England that sits comfortable on the eastern edge of the Isle of Purbeck. Although not a large town, there are plenty of attractions to see and fun things to do when in the region.
Corfe Castle is a picturesque, though dilapidated, structure in the village of the same name. The castle looks amazing from the car park, and you will no doubt be impressed by the size of the castle grounds. The castle was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. It then served as a royal fortress for several hundred years. At the entrance, you’ll be able to find a sheet with information on the castle and its history.
You can also take a nice walk around Durlston Castle. Once you arrive at the car park next to the castle, you’ll find a footpath that runs along the right wall. From here, the view is amazing, and on a clear day it is possible to see the Isle of Wight. This short walk is two miles roundtrip and takes you along the coastal footpath from Durlston Castle to Anvil Point lighthouse.
A nice way to see some of the Purbeck countryside is to take the train between Norden and Swanage. This route passes Corfe Castle, Harmans Cross, and Herston Halt. The line runs for six miles, although plans are underway to extend this to Wareham. Services run every day from the start of April through late October.
