Sun City Transportation

Sun City is a resort complex in the North West Province of South Africa bordering on the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.  Often called the “Las Vegas of Africa,” there are four hotels, a large casino, a theme park, and two championship golf courses–here’s how to get to them.

Getting To Sun City

While Sun City does have a small airport for private planes and jets, the closest is O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg about two hours away. Tambo is serviced by many major airlines, including South African Airways, British Airways, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, and Singapore Airlines.

If you don’t want to charter a flight to air strip near Sun City, you have a few of options:

Shuttle Service

A share shuttle service is about $50.00 USD and only runs from Tambo to Sun City. It’s a very easy way to get there without the hassle of driving. The company meets the flights and if they are later–a common occurrence when flying internationally–the company will provide transportation.

Car Rental

If you are planning to see other areas of South Africa or don’t want to share shuttle service, there are many car rental options available. It is about a 2.5 to 3 hour journey depending on traffic.  Weekends are quite crowded and the road is narrow.  If you are staying at a hotel in the Sun City complex, just drive up to the valet and they will take care of the rest.

Hotel Bus

For those who do not wish to walk to the various hotels and activities within the resort, a bus service will pick you up at the hotel front entrance and take you to most other activities. The service operates throughout the day and into the late night hours. While most of the hotels are within close proximity to each other, the Palace of the Lost City is set on top of a hill and is away from the other facilities.

Car Rental

If you want to explore the area on your own or do a self-drive though the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, there is a car rental service that will deliver a car to you at the Sky Park behind the Cabanas Hotel. Take the Sky Train to reach the lot. When you are ready to return the car, they will bring you back to the Sun City complex.
