Starwood Links to Caesars for Earning, Awards

SmarterTravel

Beginning on January 9, 2014, members of the Starwood Preferred Guest program will be able to earn and redeem points for stays at Caesars Entertainment hotels. Reciprocally, members of Caesars’ Total Rewards program will be able to earn and redeem points for stays at Starwood hotels.

On the earning side, members will earn two Starpoints per $1 spent at Caesars hotels, plus their normal Total Rewards earnings.

Caesars nights (but not stays) count toward Starwood elite status. But only 10 nights are counted, and they only apply toward earning Gold or Platinum status.

Total Rewards members who have Seven Stars elite status will automatically receive Gold status in the Preferred Guest program. There’s no reciprocal matching for elite members of Starwood’s program.

To earn and redeem points through both programs, members must link their accounts by registering.

Award prices haven’t been published yet, so it’s too early to assess the value of award stays at the 17 participating Caesars properties, most of which are in Las Vegas.

At two points per $1, the earning rate for Preferred Guest members at Caesars hotels is underwhelming. The lack of elite recognition of Starwood members at Caesars properties is a negative as well.

Still, the tie-up does give Starwood greater presence in Las Vegas, where it’s otherwise underrepresented.
