Southwest flies into the blogosphere

It’s not surprising that longtime trendsetter Southwest has launched (as far as I know) the first blog sanctioned by a major U.S. airline.

Called Nuts About Southwest, the blog’s first entry was written by Brian Lusk, the airline’s Manager of Customer Communication and Corporate Editor. But Lusk won’t be the only blogger. In fact, the plan is for employees from flight attendants and pilots to mechanics and executives to add their thoughts about Southwest. As Lusk puts it, “Our goal is for this blog to go beyond the facts and numbers to give you insight into our fantastic Employees-what motivates them, how they do their jobs, and a look into the way they serve you, our Customers.”

The challenge for all blogs (even this one) is to post enough useful and/or thought-provoking content that readers will want to return again and again. After perusing some of Southwest’s entries, I have to say they’re not there yet. Some of the writing is shameless self-promotion, such as this line written by a pilot: “If you aren’t already in the San Diego area then snag one of Southwest Airlines’ legendary low fares and get yourself to Lindbergh International Airport.”

That said, I have to give credit where it’s due, and some of the posts are at least entertaining. I particularly enjoyed reading about the hilarity that ensued when a mechanic’s work was interrupted by a swarm of bees.

I may not be nuts about Southwest’s blog yet, but I’m willing to give it a chance.
