In the 1980s and 1990s, South Central Los Angeles had a reputation for gang violence. And while it gained notoriety at the time through television and movies, a lot has changed in the decades since. Here are tips from travelers about warnings and dangers in South Central.
In the early 90s, Los Angeles had a gang problem. Rival gangs often battled in this area of L.A. But times have changed. Gang violence is significantly down.
While gang violence did often occur during the 80s and early 90s, it rarely focused on outsiders. In terms of violent crimes, more occurred in New York or Chicago than in L.A. Television and movies amplified gang life here, so while it did exist, it was never as bad as many people thought.
While gang violence may not be as prevalent as it was two decades ago, that doesn't mean areas around South Central L.A. are completely safe. Crime such as armed robbery is more likely to occur in South Central, while pickpocketing and scams are more common in other parts of Los Angeles such as Hollywood.
If you are a fan of rap from the early 90s you've probably heard a handful of artists refer to Compton. Many of the same musicians who have gone on to become major record producers (such as Dr. Dre) reference Compton. You may be curious to check out the area, which can be fine, if you know what you're doing.
If you really want to visit Compton, consider simply driving through. Staying in your vehicle is generally fine as car jacking is not a major issue here. If you decide to stop for something to eat, lock everything up and take valuables with you.
It is best to avoid Compton, Gardena, and other portions of South Central at night. Armed robbery and breaking into vehicles is more likely to happen at night.
