Sorrento Shopping
Sorrento is a small town in Southern Italy along the scenic Amalfi Coast. In addition to easy access to clear swimming water, tiny offshore islands, and steep-but-walkable hills, Sorrento also offers wonderful shopping. Sorrento shopping will provide you with a great memory of your trip.
What to Buy in Sorrento
Sorrento is filled with many shops, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon browsing. When thinking about what to buy in Sorrento, keep certain things in mind. Sorrento craftsmen take great pride in creating high-quality items that have often been produced in the town for many centuries. Bear in mind that what you’ll see here is often a local specialty that might be rarely seen anywhere else. This will give you a chance to find something truly unique.
Sorrento Specialties
Buyers will find several area specialties that are sold at a much higher markup elsewhere. The region’s famous lemons give rise to products that include delicious and intensely lemon flavored candies, cookies, and limoncello (the region’s world famous liquor). Lemons are also a motif seen in many locally produced items such as tiles and ceramic dishes.
Another favorite for local shoppers are leather goods, such as belts and bespoke men’s shoes. A handmade wallet or detailed purse makes the perfect keepsake or the ideal item to give as a present when returning home.
Other popular items that can easily fit in a suitcase are pieces that are created from wood such as elegant inlaid leather boxes. Modern and antique glass pieces are also sold in many shops, including glass art pieces that can double as jewelry.
Where to Shop in Sorrento
Sorrento is not a large town. The entire area can be seen in less than a day. However, Sorrento’s many tiny streets hold dozens of shops. Many larger streets are where you’ll find groups of shops to explore in a single area. The Via Cesario runs along much of the town. It’s easy to start here where it intersects the main plaza in Sorrento, the Plaza Tasso. Remember, you can negotiate prices so don’t hesitate if you see something you like.
Other serious shopping streets in the area also include Via Degli Archi, which is a narrow side street; the slighly larger Lagro Padre Reginaldo Guiana; and the heavily traveled Via Santa Maria De Grazie. Many shopping streets in Sorrento are very narrow, so remember you can’t bring a car with you. Bring a wheeled bag for your treasures instead.
Keep in mind that shopping hours will be longer during the summer when this area sees more tourists. If you are visiting during the less traveled season, remember shops will close earlier. You can also find many hole-in-the-wall restaurants for a fast meal of Sorrentine dishes when you’re done shopping.
