Sint Maarten Shopping
Sint Maarten is a Caribbean island owned by the Dutch. It is a popular docking spot for those taking Caribbean cruises. And since most of the islands are owned by other countries, you can get some really unique dutch items on this island that you cannot get at other islands. If you plan on shopping, here are a few tips to keep in mind as you pick up chocolate, alcohol, jewelry or other fun items during your Sint Maarten shopping trip.
Go Inland for Cheaper Shopper
One of the best tips is to walk further inland to do some bargain shopping. The vendors and stores closest to the cruise port tend to have higher prices than those further inland. People may not want to walk far so they can get away with charging more. But if you are looking for a bargain or buying in bulk, taking the time to walk inland can get you the best prices.
Ask if a Jeweler is “Cruise Approved”
Another tip to keep in mind before buying jewelry is to ask if a jeweler is cruise approved. Cruise lines have a list of jewelers on the island who they have approved. This brochure should be in your room, but the jeweler should tell you if you ask. A company that is approved by a cruise line is known to sell real jewelry and not rip tourists off.
Look for Duty-Free Goods
The last tip when shopping on Sin Maarten is to look for duty-free shops and goods. These items are cheaper because you are not paying the standard import duty since you are immediately leaving the country.
