Singapore Sim Lim Square and Other Shopping

Sim Lim Square

Sim Lim Square offers a wide selection of electronics, but some retailers try to take advantage of tourists.

Where to Shop

You’re more likely to find honest vendors on the upper levels (4,5,6). Hardware Zone offers a downloadable price list so you know what you can expect to pay.

Where Not to Shop

Avoid levels one and two. Many businesses there use unethical tactics- lying about the authenticity and prices of goods, taking away items that should be included (batteries, SD cards), or not giving you what you order. They usually won’t issue refunds or accept returns. They may pressure you to pay for things you don’t want, offer “freebies” that should be included, or make false claims about warranties.

Lemon Laws

Lemon Laws apply to goods that don’t meet quality and performance standards. If you report dishonest businesses to the police, there’s often little they can do. Learn about consumer protection laws here. Tourists can file a complaint with CASE, the Consumers’ Association of Singapore.

Before Buying…

Do your research. Don’t walk into a shop as though you intend to buy something. Just ask politely about prices and features (though you already know). Test vendors’ knowledge.

Comparison shop at 3-10 stores. Tell vendors you’ll come back later; they may reduce the price. It’s helpful to shop with some one who knows the square.

Ask for discounts when paying cash or for purchases exceeding 2000 USD. There’s a surcharge for credit cards.

You can haggle. When you no longer want to negotiate, firmly walk away.

Taxes

Quoted prices don’t always include GST. Tourists can get tax rebates at the information desk.
