Silversea targets well-heeled adventure travelers

Mature, well-heeled travelers are looking for an adrenaline fix. And luxury line [% 16844 | | Silversea %] plans to give it to them.

To keep up with the growing popularity of adventure travel and exploration cruises, Silversea has purchased the expedition ship World Discoverer. The ship has a strengthened ice-class hull, which means it can navigate the coldest waters in places like Antarctica.

Silversea plans to give the ship a multi-million dollar makeover before officially introducing it to the fleet. The World Discoverer can currently carry 175 guests in all-oceanview staterooms, but Silversea will reduce that number to 140 and create new suites to approximate the line’s Silver, Grand, and Owner’s Suites. With 106 crew members, the new ship will continue Silversea’s tradition of having a high staff-to-guest ratio. Upscale public rooms will include a main dining room, a specialty restaurant, a library with Internet facilities, boutique, spa, fitness center, and several lounges.

In the coming weeks, Silversea will announce the ship’s new name and itineraries. Rest assured, those itineraries will be a tad more out of the ordinary than meandering the waters of the Caribbean or visiting the major cities of Europe. If you’ve got a sense of adventure and a few grand burning a hole in your pocket, you may want to pay more attention to Silversea this year. The line is on a quest to give cruisers a thrill in the most intimate and luxurious way possible.
