Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a wonderful place to spend time touring. However, just like in every city popular to tourists, there are traps to avoid.

Street Vendors

Besides the amazing beauty of the city, one of the first things tourists to the center of Florence will notice are the high number of street vendors selling expensive yet fake designer bags and trinkets at high prices, from sunglasses and jewelry and art posters. The practice even causes traffic jams in some areas of the city. The illegal vendors will pickup and leave if the authorities arrive, but there are laws against you buying from them as well. If a visitor or tourist is caught buying something from them they can be served with fines of up to 1,500 euros.

Once you recognize illegal street vendors and their tactics, it’s advisable to avoid making any contact with them. The vendors can become very persistent in their attempts to persuade tourists to purchase something from them. Many people have had the unfortunate experience of buying fake leather items off the street.

High Prices in the City Center

Simple items in the city center can be overpriced: This is especially true of fruit and vegetable stands. Save money by going into a local farmer’s market outside the center or a grocery store.
