Sharing taxis is common in Shillong, although the practice is surprise for most visitors. This means that when you are in a cab, the driver may pick up other passengers along the way. The practice is very green, but tourists are often surprised when those other passengers are added to their cab. Keep in mind that you should either be ready to negotiate, or choose a taxi stand with clear fares posted.
Getting in to Shillong is most effective by airplane. The nearest large city is a distance and flying into Shillong is convenient.
Night and Day buses are available for travel between the surrounding towns. Day busses are five AM to five PM, travel their routes through the day, night busses do the opposite.
A shared taxi between Gauhati and Shillong will offer many scenic views along the two and a half hour trip. You should know that a shared taxi can take some getting used to, as you are riding with strangers, however many see it as an orotundity to meet new people.
For local travel within and around Shillong, a fully booked taxi is only Rs 600. For a four hour tour you can see all the vital points. It is important to know that local taxis are not typically available near resort type hotels. Taxis are not metered, so check the prices Rs 10 per km is normal. Carry a map in case you cannot get a taxi. If you don't mind the increased cost of the hotel taxis they are safer especially at night.
