Warnings and Dangers in Madrid Security
Madrid is home to historical architecture and beautiful surroundings, but as in all urban environments, tourists should be on guard for muggings and robberies.
Pickpocket Crimes on The Rise
Many tourists report that they have been robbed while riding on the subway, especially after night, losing all of their valuables, belongings, and cash. Additionally, pickpocket thieves are around just about every area of Spain, so it is essential to keep your money and other valuables hidden away on your person when out and about. If you are worried your valuables may be stolen from you, consider keeping them locked away in a safe space in the hotel or hostel you have rented while you are visiting Spain.
Children Stealing From Tourists
Children have been known to beg for help or ask for assistance to “gather signatures” for upcoming school events. While getting signatures from innocent tourists, groups of children have been known to pickpocket or threaten those who are helping them until they are able to obtain the valuables and money from the victim before running off. Because they are children in large groups, it can be difficult to discern which ones are potentially dangerous or those who simply truly need assistance.
