Santorini Island Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Santorini Islands Things to Do

The Santorini Islands are really like no other place in the world with hundreds of buildings located on a volcanic cliff. Here are some tips on different things to do while you are visiting the Santorini Islands.

Visit Fira

The main city and capital of Santorini is Fira. There are around 2000 people who live in the area full time, but during in season there are as many as 6000 cruise ship passengers that pass through on a busy day. Fira offers a promenade that is lined with restaurants as well as jewelry, clothing, craft, and souvenir stores. Take some time enjoying the great views that the city has to offer along with the great shopping and dining.

Red Beach

Red beach is a beautiful, small beach that offers good swimming and is great for snorkeling. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas for around 6 Euros.

The beach is located near the archeological site in Akrotiri, which is about 8 kilometers southwest of Fira. The beach is famous for its black volcanic and fine red sand and rocks.

If you plan a visit to Red Beach it is important to know that you will have to trek down a path that is steep and a bit tricky to navigate, so make sure that you wear good shoes. You can also reach the beach by boat.

Volcano Walk

Nea Kameni is located in the middle of Caldera. You can take a boat excursion to the volcanic island and pay a few euro to visit the park. There is a nice path that you can walk along and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It will take about 20 minutes to get to the top where you can enjoy a panorama view.

Ancient Thira

Ancient Thira is located on the top of a high cliff above Kamari. This is an excavated site of the post-Minoan settlement of the island. The buildings are spread over a terraced area and include remains of market places, an early Christian basilica, baths, houses, temples, and an impressive Amphitheatre.

You can drive to the town up a hairpin road. There is a parking lot available and from there you will walk up a path and into the ancient town.
