This Florida town is a favorite for those who want a dash of culture and history with their sunshine.
Saint Augustine Things To Do
From kayaking along the coast to exploring the city’s Spanish roots, Saint Augustine is one of the most charming destinations in all of Florida. The white sand beaches and Colonial Spanish architecture invite guests to stretch out and linger here from sunrise to sunset.
Spanish Influence
Of all the cities in Florida, it is perhaps Saint Augustine that has most clung to the city’s age old Spanish roots. This can be seen most vividly in the Colonial Spanish Quarter. For a chance to see life here as it was back then start with the Living History Museum. Many exhibits over several buildings demonstrate things such as the typical home of the era, as well as things such as carpentry, blacksmithing, and the creation of leather items. You can even come back at night for a ghost tour. Ghost tours show off the history of the place even more and include tours of the local cemetery. You can also take a haunted pub tour that will bring you to several area bars for drinks and lots of fun spooky feelings.
From The Water
Another great way to explore the city is on the local waterways and nearby Atlantic Ocean. Kayaking tours bring people along the many inter-coastal waterways in the area for a look at the sea. Look for the Saint Augustine lighthouse. The symbol of the city houses a visitor’s center and museum. You can also get on the water via a tour of the bay on a local boat. The trip takes about an hour. A cruise will take you past Fort Mantanzas, another area landmark. Many people also like to explore Castillo de San Marcos. This is the oldest masonry fort in the entire country with a view of the entire area and lots of places to walk across. The local beach is the Anastasia State Park. Camping facilities are available here for a small fee.
