Safety Tips in Seychelles – Travel Safety Tips

Seychelles Warnings and Dangers

The Seychelles are a group of islands off the coast of Africa. While full of beaches, it’s also subject to dangerous storms and stinging wildlife. Watch the weather and be mindful of the creatures that make this place their home.

The Weather

The Seychelles are subject to periodic strong winds and rains. Check the weather before you leave each morning. Bear in mind that the wind can easily affect the local currents. Make sure there are no dangerous waves before you head into the water.

Be Careful Under Trees

The strong local winds can easily knock down items such as coconuts and breadfruit. Move away if any fruit looks perched at a precarious angle.

Stingrays, Sharks, Sea Urchins, and Tarantulas

Baie Ste Anne is the main bay and is a great place to see rays. While these impressive sea creatures are generally harmless, do not corner them or you may get stung. Sharks are present in many coves; while also generally harmless, get out of their way if you see one. Watch for sea urchins as well as they have sharp spikes that can get into your skin. The same is true of cone shells.

On land, there are many kinds of spiders including large palm ones, which are harmless. However, Tarantulas aren’t. Keep away if you see one. Sharp corals are also a problem so bring thick shoes for walking on the beach or swimming.

Coco de Mer

The rare coco de mer or sea coco should only be purchased if you see a green tag along one side indicating it has been cleared for export.
