Warnings and Dangers in Hong Kong: Areas to Avoid

Travelers from all around the world flock to Hong Kong, but when visiting it’s important to be informed about these Hong Kong warnings and dangers. Here’s what to watch for whether you’re vacationing in Hong Kong or just passing through.

Beware Special Upstair Invitations from Markets

As a visitor, it’s understandable that you may be seeking to take home a few souvenirs. But when you’re shopping, you need to make sure you’re in a safe environment. Many travelers have experienced situations where market employees invite them upstairs. While this may seem like a great invitation or exclusive viewing for you, do not take the risk.

This tactic of luring tourists away from the general public can be a diversion to take advantage of them. This includes robbery, kidnapping, or forcing the victim into the sex trade. Another dangerous situation to avoid in Hong Kong is when a police raid happens while victims are being lured to the upstairs area. You do not want to be considered an accomplice to a crime.

No matter how nice the store employees or store owners may be, for your safety, politely say no to such invitations. If you are not able to see the product on the main level, that is an immediate red flag to leave as soon as possible.

Street Crimes and Muggings

When you’re walking on the streets in Hong Kong, it’s important to not travel alone. Doing so puts you at risk of being mugged. Be sure to learn a basic words and phrases to use in Hong Kong, or travel with a certified tourist assistant/translator that can speak the language fluently.

Most muggings happen because tourists are lured into situations without knowing what the perpetrator is saying. Another option is to always carry pepper spray with you.

Typhoons in the Summer

Typhoons are common in Hong Kong. If you plan on traveling to Hong Kong between the months of July and August, be aware that it is considered typhoon season. If a typhoon warning is announced, go to your accommodations immediately. Even if the typhoon does not touch land, these storms and winds can still cause major damage.
