Warnings and Dangers in Halifax Safety
Halifax, located in Halifax Harbor, is known for its fishing fleets, coastal waterways, historical shipyards, and being named as the fourth best place to live in Canada. If you are going to be visiting Halifax, here are some warnings and dangers you should know about as you plan your trip.
Although reports show crime is up, a lot of it is related to areas in Dartmouth (such as North Preston). Be aware that over the last year, the north end of Halifax has been subject to swarmings by some kids. The neighborhood in Dartmouth between the two major bridges can be a little shady, so if you are looking to stay in a cheap hotel in this area you should know that there is a reason why it’s cheaper and it’s not a good reason.
Other areas to stay clear of include Gottingen (only at night…during the day it is not horrible at all and there is a major police detachment right there), Uniacke Square (off of Gottingen), and some streets slightly outside the city around Dutch Village.
The Mayor of Halifax jumped into the Halifax Harbor not that long ago amidst taunts from the general populous to “prove” that the water, after some $300,000,000 worth of activities over 30 years to clean it up, was actually safe to swim in. The mayor swimming in the water wasn’t proof enough for most people who say it will take them another 30 years before they will believe it is safe enough to swim n despite what the politicians say. Unfortunately, Canada has not had a good reputation recently for being forthcoming about environmental wrongs so caution is the word on this one.
