All roads lead to Rome, and Rome has a variety of transportation options to get you there.

Scooters – Vespas

If you want to get around Rome quickly and easily, renting a scooter is a great option. Scooters are small and fit where cars and busses can’t, plus they are very easy to park. Scooters can be rented with a Class C driver’s license, but the prices may vary and you will probably need to put down a deposit in case of damage. Also, make sure you have experience driving a scooter (or are a quick learner), because driving one for the first time can be tricky and the traffic may not allow for a slow, leisurely pace. You can rent scooters by the hour, the day, or the week so there are options available for everyone.

Taxis, Rental Cars and Private Drivers

Depending on how long you need transportation for, you could rent your own car to drive around Rome or hire a private driver. If you don’t want to deal with the traffic and want a local’s take in the City, consider a private driver. If you want the freedom to come and go as you please and aren’t intimidated by the traffic, rent a car. If you just need to get from the airport to your hotel, or to a tourist site, you may want to hail a taxi (but make sure it’s an official company). If you are driving yourself, keep in mind that the nearest parking to the Vatican is the Terminal Gianicolo.

Trains and Trams

Trains run from the airport to the city, and you can buy a metro pass and take trains to the major tourist areas in Rome. There are only two metro lines so the schedules and stops are easy to navigate. As an alternative, many people prefer taking the tram to busses or taxis, but there are only around six tram routes throughout the city, so you need to pay attention to their schedules.

Busses

Terravision airport shuttles will take you from the airport to Rome on a regularly scheduled basis. When in Rome, you can hop on an express bus or a local bus relatively easily. You can also consider the Archeobus, a tour bus which visits the major tourist destinations in Rome, but also some you might not be aware of. A journey on the Archeobus lasts for about two hours. You can also get from Rome to Siena by bus easily.
