The castle dates back to the 19th Century, and its history includes pre World War I battles and fortifications. The fort does look a bit odd now simply because it is surrounded by a parking lot. The wind and sand in the area keeps the castle smooth, so it has a much different look from castles you would see in Europe.
The National Museum showcases artifacts dating back to when the area was predominately made up of nomadic tribes. You can learn the history dating back from the earliest known people in the area through the movement of Europeans into the area moving into the First World War. You can see how The Great War influenced the region and how the carving up of the Middle East by British and French leaders led to the creation of current nations.
This wide-open square can be eerily quiet at some points of the day. Think of it as a traditional square in a Spanish town, but much, much larger due to the seemingly never-ending desert.
