Most people arrive in the Greek island of Rhodes by plane, but once there you’ll need to find the best way to get around for your travel style. Many rent cars or join guided tours, both of which are more reliable than public transit.

Car Rentals

There are several rental options on the island, and they offer some good deals on cars. Roads are in good shape, and driving is a great way to get around the countryside. You’ll have maximum flexibility with your own car to drive since the island is relatively small; you won’t use much gas driving around for a few days, but be aware gas is more expensive here than it is in the States. Zeus car rentals are popular, and motorbikes are also available for rent.

Buses

Public transportation like buses get mixed reviews: buses are clean and efficient, but may not stick to a reliable schedule. Stations can be chaotic, but bus fare is cheap and will get you where you’re going–just perhaps not on time.

Taxis

Taxis are common and can be helpful if your bus is late. They’re also affordable and you can negotiate the price. Always agree on a rate before you start the ride, since some drivers can gauge prices or won’t go to the old town area. In hilly areas like nearby Lindros, donkeys are a more common mode of transport than taxis.
