With the increasing prevalence of spend-based mileage-earning, it’s becoming more and more difficult to squeeze outsized value from frequent-flyer miles. At least one sure-fire mileage-maximizer remains, however: periodic award discounts, which make those hard-earned miles go further.
This latest award sale from Delta is an example, and an opportunity for SkyMiles members to fly more for less.
Through November 30, Delta SkyMiles members can redeem as few as 10,000 miles each way (roundtrip required) for award flights between select U.S. cities.
Flights must be booked at least 21 days in advance, and travel at the discounted rates must be completed between January 5 and February 24, 2016. Blackout dates: February 12 – February 16, and February 19.
Delta stresses that the discount is being offered on “select” routes, and lists a number of affected city pairs. But the list is by no means exhaustive; in addition to the sample routes noted on Delta’s website, I found roundtrips available on some days for 20,000 miles between Los Angeles and New York, and on other desirable routes as well.
Most of the discounted award flights would normally cost at least 25,000 miles roundtrip, so the 20,000-mile sale price represents a solid 20 percent discount. Or, to put it differently, the discount amounts to a 20 percent increase in the value of your Delta miles.
In an era in which devaluation is the norm, a 20 percent value boost shouldn’t be overlooked.
