Puri Things to Do

Puri is a city in India, located on the Bay of Bengal. While in Puri, tourists can soak up the sun on the beach, admire its many temples, and fish on nearby Chilika Lake.

Temples

While all of the temples are worth visiting, perhaps the most famous is Konark. Constructed in the 13th century, the temple is renowned for its detailed carvings and sculptures. Konark can get rather crowded, so plan ahead. Tour guides in the city and your travel agent can help you set up transportation and other accommodations. The tour of Konark includes tickets to the adjacent archeological museum. The temple is also near the beach and several fine restaurants, bars, and hotels are within walking distance. Besides Konark, save some time for the other temples, including the temple of Lord Jagannath and its shrines of Bimala Devi.

Beach

When in Puri, don’t forget about the beach. Resorts and hotels line the coast, so keep that in mind if you want to stay near the ocean. The beaches are accessible and safe. Puri Beach is the most popular amongst tourists. The beach is open with plenty of space to sit under an umbrella and enjoy a drink. Restaurants and bars are easy to find here, so it’s a great place to take the family for a day. At night, resorts and nightclubs host dances and live music. Check the local newspaper to get information regarding upcoming events.

Chilika Lake

For a family friendly experience, head to Chilika Lake and look for dolphins. Locals fish from the shore, and you can too if you purchase the proper day license. Outside of fishing, you can swim, play in the sand, or take a boat to a nearby island. Chiilka island is a worthwhile excursion, but it takes a few hours to get there by boat. In the summer, with temperatures regularly reaching triple digits, the boat ride may not be suitable for kids or older tourists.
