Puerto Plata Shopping
A scenic location in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is also known for its eclectic shopping options. Here are some tips that may help you find what you’re in the mood to buy.
The Playa Dorada Plaza is a shopping mall located within the Playa Dorada tourist complex, close to town. Some of the shops have fixed and fairly competitive prices. The liquor stores sell bottles of rum for only slightly more than they cost from the Brugal Rum factory. Dominican coffee, pineapple wine, souvenirs, and postcards are also available here at reasonable prices.
Other shops don’t display any prices at all, and this means that you are expected to haggle with the shopkeepers.
The Brugal Rum Distillery offers a factory tour, followed by an opportunity to taste and buy rum. There are several different flavors available. The shop also sells other items, such as clothing and glasses.
Markets and Boutiques
Puerto Plata’s Orange Market is located toward the western end of the beach. It has bright orange shops with thatched roofs. Most shops sell jewelry made from amber and the local larimar stone, as well as boxes of cigars, bottles of rum, and the local “mamajuana” aphrodisiac. In addition, shoppers can find colorful Haitian artwork, wooden ornaments, maracas, drums, t-shirts, magnets, and other souvenirs. Haggling is encouraged. Consider pricing items at the Playa Dorada Plaza before trying to get deals at the Orange Market.
Another local favorite is the Boutique Rainbow Gift Shop, where shoppers can buy shirts, jewelry, artwork, and more.
