Lavender grows everywhere in Istria, and you smell it as you travel. All over the town of Porec you can hear people yelling "lavenda lavenda," and selling lavender in small fabric bags as souvenirs. They recommend you put a small bag in your closet or drawers to keep your clothes smelling nice.
Locals make unique foods that you can buy including homemade wines in fruit flavors such as blackberry, cherry and others. You can find interesting fruits and vegetables at the open air market which is covered by a roof only, and visit local growers in their market stalls. Garlic and paprika can be purchased fresh to flavor any number of dishes.
If you are staying for a longer visit, you can buy fresh fish at the fish market. While not as large as the market in Pula, it has half a dozen fishmongers that have a wide variety of fish. Some varieties are gilt-head sea bream, Atlantic mackerel, red mullet, sole, tunny, conger eel, sea perch, mussels, squid, shrimp and langoustine. If you can't find the right price at the market, you can cross the street to the discount market and find just about anything you want for a discounted price. Walking to the market is a better choice than driving unless you have a large order to buy, because you have to make a large loop to arrive in front of the shop.
